The Celluloid Closet, by Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman (USA, 1995, 101’)

The Celluloid Closet

The Celluloid Closet is a witty and provocative depiction of Hollywood and how it has mirrored and defined homosexuality. From gay comedians to vampire lesbians, from feeble queens to sadist predators, from good guys to bad guys, gay characters have been represented on screen since the dawn of seventh art. The documentary strikes
this subject head-on and confirms Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman’s talent as idea and image editors, making the best of hundreds of classical film clips, and relaying on Lily Tomlin’s poignant narration. A wide range of Hollywood stars share their thoughts, among them Tom Hanks, Shirley MacLaine, Susan Sarandon, Whoopi Goldberg, Tony Curtis and Gore Vidal, who share some behind-the-scenes anecdotes. On the one hand, The Celluloid Closet points the finger at the Hollywood system, but on the other hand, the documentary is an unprejudiced depiction on the exploitation of sexual myths and the ways by which sexual roles evolved throughout the 20th century.
